Artist info:
Michael Lotenero’s digitally produced edgy editorial art stretches visual boundaries and is a digital interpretation of his fine art. He uses traditional media in his large-scale oil paintings for exhibition. “Most of my work is on paper, canvas, reverse painted glass, and most recently reverse painted clear vinyl. I really just like to stay open to all mediums”, noted Michael. His style could be described as primitive and loose. “I like things to ‘happen,’ that is the exciting part, the magic. I think going back and forth between traditional media and digital is really liberating. They both constantly inform each other.”
His favorite project started as a fun email collaboration with David Carson. Michael emailed David a digital illustration and David added his touch with typography or photography. David like it so much, he included the art in Marshall McLuhan’s “Book of Probes.” The collaboration continued and David used the work in his own book, TREK and in BIG Magazine. Michael’s clients include Nintendo, IBM, Lotus, United States Postal Service, Raygun Magazine, Speak Magazine, Alaska Public Radio, David Carson Design, and AIGA Pittsburgh.
Awards and honors are numerous and have come from the Addy’s, AIGA PGH Communications Show, Print’s Regional Design Annual, Graphic Design USA, HOW’s Self-Promotion Annual, Print’s A-Z, Step-By-Step Design 100, and most recently an Outstanding Achievement Award in HOW’s Interactive Annual. Also his film-installation piece “Navarro” was a finalist in the D.C. Independent Film Festival.
