Penelope Dullaghan + Baltimore Sun Newspaper
May 12, 2009
For about 2 years, Penelope Dullaghan with Scott Hull Associates created a weekly piece of art for the “Real Life” column of the Baltimore Sun newspaper. It was a forum where various authors wrote articles, stories, and essays for the paper. Given creative freedom, courtesy of good relationship with the art director, to independently think up the perfect image to correlate with the story, Penelope was able to experiment with different ideas and techniques. She played a lot with scale, perspective, line, color, and shape. It was a challenge at times to think up ideas for each week’s feature, but this honed her conceptual skills and advanced Penelope artistically in a whole new way.
Penelope got quite a bit of feedback from these pieces. Emails from the authors thanking her for illustrating their words and citizens of Baltimore telling her they looked forward to her images each week. Penelope says, “It was really rewarding for me to know that I was reaching out and people were paying attention.”
