Improving 2009
January 22, 2009In 28 years of original collaborations we have made our fair share of New Years’ resolutions. But this year we wanted to ask our artists for a list of their own. It is often more interesting and inspiring to read other individuals’ resolutions and the motivations behind them.
Still, a few things stood out to us as clear goals for the coming year: We must be pro-active and responsible for our own creative health. We must have a plan and a vision. We must ask ourselves, what circumstances are we willing to change to grow? How can we ensure that our persistence pays off in the end? As we head into a new year and a new field of opportunities, ask yourself the timeless question, “What would I do if I knew I could not fail?” Struggling artists are often struggling because they can’t see how to launch their art to the next level.
Fortunately, inspiring and pursuing that vision is always a priority here at Scott Hull Associates. Nothing is of higher importance. Our artists create because we have to, knowing no other way. We are always open to new ideas and inspirations. We are passionate about life, seeing it as art. That part is easy. But to ultimately succeed, we need to ask ourselves some difficult questions and look seriously at our answers.
Don’t let the growth of your art be another forgotten New Year’s resolution.
Lisa Ballard:
- get my overall health checked out (mammogram, heart, cholesterol, blood work, bone density, and thyroid.)
- for my art business, the goal is to target specific manufacturers that fit my style. I also have a line called “Iam” that I want to develop in more depth
John Ceballos:
- be a better suitor to my muse
- lose weight, grow hair, and exercise
John Maggard: I resolve to not “friend” anyone my daughter knows on Facebook…she’s already totally scandalized (“OMG Dad, YOU can’t be on there – you’re too OLD!!”) that I have an account there at all.
David Reinbold: to appreciate everything
Jeremy Holmes: to be the quickest draw with a butt cloth and balm this side of the mighty Mississippi. Or in other words, I want to be a good poppa.
Larry Moore:
- Surf more, a lot more (just got two new boards to aid my resolution).
- Do larger more meaningful paintings.
- Work much harder. (Paint paint paint paint.)
- Finish my book (it’s in progress).
- Go to sleep by 10 each night and get up early every day.
- Back to the gym, swim twice a week. seriously.
- Decide I don’t like wine.
Von R. Glitschka: Get my new book idea published.
Scott Hull: My only resolutions are to eat healthier and exercise more—both easier said than done.
Grant Gilliland:
According to Yahoo! news, 2008 was over a couple of days ago…and I am surprised to see it go so soon, for I feel that ’08 and myself barely had time to get to know each other…So, in order to see that 2009 is experienced to the utmost, I will utilize this moment in an attempt to come up with some easily-recalled yet snappy maxims to carry along in my metaphorical fanny pack (brain) to store for quick reference to ensure success! Here we go…
- Get a Sharpie endorsement.
- Don’t paint with sunglasses on.
- Always dress up, even if you’re going to the corner store for toilet paper.
- Don’t ever end business emails with “Naw mean?”
- Buy more domain names.
- Keep a Richard Nixon mask within reach at all times.
- When meeting someone with a dog, always address the dog first.
- Learn dog language.
- Draw in busy public areas.
- Build robots to do your vector work and/or Twitter updates.
- Realize that every moment is new and…wait, did I leave the oven on?
- Balance work with play.
